Sheila and Sue

Tuesday 26 October 2021: Sheila of Sheilalovesfabric and Sue of Modelled_by_Madge are today’s sewing friend guests from the Sewover50 community.

Sheila and Sue are Sewover50 sewing friends

Sewing brought these two sewing friends together but they have more than sewing that keeps them together.

Yes they have different fit issues but they work together to create clothes they love to wear. Both Sheila and Sue provide great suggestions if you’d like to find a sewing friend online.

Blanket coats

Tuesday 20 June 2023: Sheila takes us through her blanket coat research over 2 episodes.

National Wool Museum was a source of her research.

Katie Makes a dress used blankets as coat fabric.

Mending Mayhem followers and Morrissews are great people to follow to learn various mending techniques.

Listen to Sheila’s report about the information Alf Newby of Albany Mills in Western Australia wrote about the dyeing he did of the woolen yarns. He started working in the mill at the age of 14 and by 40 years old, he was the principal dyer.

27 June 2023: This episode Sheila shares the international research she did through the SewOver50 network.

Many thanks for Judith Rosalind, Dawna of Spoolriver and Elke of Sewthreadbear for their local blanket history knowledge.

Update: Diane of Style Falcon Patterns has provided this link about the Hudson Bay point blankets. Thank you for providing this information Diane.

  1. This was so informative! Thank you! I made a coat out of an old wool blanket years ago, and I have some other blankets that I’m hoarding for future coats. I’m so glad to have all this info.

    • Sounds like you are about to make more then? This week is part 2 where Sheila talks about her overseas research findings and patterns she has used with her blankets.

  2. I enjoyed hearing Sheila’s research. We were a blanket, not doona, family. When our parents were telling us to get into bed, they would say , “Come on, under the Onks!”
Onks = Onkaparinga blankets. One we for red Summer. Two for Winter!
