Monday 8 February 2021: On Saturday 27 March 2021 is the first online Autumn Sewing Celebration brought to you by the Australian Sewing Guild.

Tessa Chesworth, the Celebrations Committee lead talks about the aim of the Autumn Sewing Celebration, the program of 14 presentations, the 2 live Zoom sessions including cocktail hour and the virtual showbag for participants.

All participants can ask questions from each presenter on the day and at the end of the day.

This event is designed to allow you to attend a very full day of presenters both on the day and up to 6 months after the event, from the comfort and safety of your sewing room.

10 August 2020: Sarah is the designer behind Pattern Union and she enjoys supporting Australian Sewing Guild members with her patterns. As Sarah says, inclusivity isn’t just about size. Her patterns can be adapted to different body types.

Pattern Union was created by Sarah Pondevie, owner of Workspace Fashion and Design school, teacher and maker of fashion, who has a passion for pattern making. Her years of working in made-to-measure clothing and teaching has given her the breadth of knowledge to create a range of clothing patterns that appreciates the fact that traditional sizing does not reflect standard measurements.

Monday 20 July 2020: Trish is the owner of Draft T Studio and a Tasmanian local. She offers Australian Sewing Guild (ASG) members a discount on her online sewing classes. This podcast is one of the many ASG Monday podcasts available.

Monday 5 October 2020: Linda Jobson has spent most of her working life making custom made bras and teaches bra making in Queensland and New South Wales. Louise Sparrow, Chair of the Australian Sewing Guild (ASG) talked about the new online bra making video series Linda of Linda’s Lingerie has produced with a discount code for ASG members – found under Industry partners, when members log in.

Linda is an Aussie that has adapted her face to face workshops and now provides a set of bra making videos for anyone who’s keen on making bras and continue onto making your own custom made bras.

Tuesday 19 January 2021: Today’s podcast is the second Sewcialists podcast for 2021.

Zero waste sewing is the first Sewcialists theme month for 2021 running in February and it’s quite fitting as many people tend to use the new year to rethink their sewing goals. This Sewcialists podcast is one of 2 Zero Waste Sewing podcasts we have developed to support your take up the Zero waste sewing challenge with us at Sewcialists.

Liz Haywood’s Zero Waste Sewing book was a recipient of a 2020 NYC Big Book Award in the craft/hobby category. 

Liz is trained as a clothing patternmaker here in Australia and worked in the fashion industry for twenty years, mainly ladies wear.  She was fortunate to work at many interesting places with talented, inspiring people and you’ll hear about these workplaces in this podcast.  Now Liz lives in South Australia’s Clare Valley with her young family, where she’s re-discovering sewing for pleasure and we’re benefitting from this through her Zero Waste Sewing experience.

Liz originally authored of The Dressmaker’s Companion-A practical guide to sewing clothes, published in 2017.

Monday 2 November 2020: Kenneth was gracious enough to record an updated podcast now that we’re living in this new normal with Covid.

You’ll have noticed his fabulous work making Barbie clothes. But if you’ve listened to Kenneth’s podcast ‘All Grown Up Now’, you’ll know how significant making Barbie clothes have been in his life and how making Barbie clothes help the panic attacks away.

He talks about his love for Fortuny fabrics and how is sewing advice is all about fit and building a few well fitted basic patterns you can go back to again and again where you can make the style changes you want, when you want to.

Monday 26 November 2020: Gretchen Hirsch or Gertie, responded to the Pandemic by developing the free Harlow Pajama pattern.

Some people find Youtube videos are how they learn and sew. Gertie has developed a Youtube tutorial that runs for just under 2 hours, to help new sewists along. The Harlow pajama pattern by Gertie was sponsored by B&J Fabrics to give back to the sewing community. The Australian Sewing Guild picked this free pattern as their October sewing challenge for members to make their own pajamas.

Linda is a successful bra making tutor and she now offers bra making classes and she’s offering ASG members a special discount. Linda is an Aussie that has adapted from running face to face workshops to providing videos for anyone to access.

Monday 14 September 2020: A message from ASG Chair, Louise Sparrow

‘Over the past few months I have enjoyed running a series of online workshops.  In particular, I enjoy chatting with participants and getting to know members that I might not otherwise have the opportunity to meet.  One theme that keeps coming up is that being in isolation or lock-down has given people more time to sew.  Lots of new garments are being made with no occasion to wear them as there are fewer opportunities to get dressed up. Let’s fix that!  October 2020 will be ‘show and tell’ month.

We want to see what is being produced in sewing rooms around the nation.  Every Monday, post a picture in social media (Facebook or Instagram) of one of your creations, using two hashtags – #MeMadeMonday and #AustralianSewingGuild.  The hashtags will enable us to search for your pictures and compile an album.

Add a short description including information such as what pattern you used, type of fabric, special techniques employed, challenges faced, etc. Garments, quilts, patchwork, applique, handbags, embroidery – we want to see it all!
There are only 2 rules:
Some form of sewing must be used – machine, overlocker, hand-stitching.
The item must be made my you.  Please don’t post someone else’s work. Don’t be shy.  This is your chance to show off and brag.’

Monday 31 August 2020: How many listeners remember those weekend Pattern Puzzles that Anita used to run a few years ago on Facebook? They were a great way to learn about patterns, the pieces within a garment and then, what the puzzle garment was. You can still find these pattern puzzles on her Well-suited blog. Anita is an ASG Industry Partner and offers discounts to members.

Anita encourages sewists to continue to learn new sewing skills and techniques. She also reminds sewists that it’s also good to go back to making your favourite patterns to keep your sewing motivation on fire.

Monday 24 August 2020: Louise Sparrow, Chair of the Australian Sewing Guild is back this week. There are 2 new online sewing technique workshops available for September. French Seam refinement is a great technique to include to elevate your Spring sewing projects. For unlined jackets, mitred corners of all dimensions is another useful technique to add to your sewing skills. These are just 2 of the online sewing workshops on offer in September.

The September sewing challenge is based on the oh-so-simple Harvest Top from Peppermint Magazine is our pattern of choice.  The design lines present lots of options for use of colour, patterns, plains, trims…endless possibilities.

Monday 6 July 2020: Last week ASG launched their pleated skirt sewalong to give Specialty Pleaters a boost. If you want fabric to be pleated for you, it’s wonderful to be able to find a business that can pleat fabric for you. Specialty Pleaters was established in 1925 and they’re located in Melbourne.

Last year ASG ran a similar sewalong using a circle skirt as the project. This year, the sewalong is all guides you through making a straight skirt with a yoke. Tatyana Anderson is managing this sewalong over the next 8 weeks. Make sure you register today.
